Influence of Spiral Setting on Vehicle Speed on Curve

Abstract

Aimed at the problem that whether the use of spirals and their lengths influenced vehicle track characteristic of curves or not,the highway-driver-vehicle-environment simulation system was used to simulate the process of vehicle driving on curves under modes of curve cutting and curve following. The vehicle track and speed were obtained. Analysis result shows that spirals can change the topological relation between vehicle track and curve alignment with curve cutting and increase the radius of track within curve area, and this effect increases with the length of spiral. Therefore, drivers can choose a higher speed to negotiate curves, but not all higher speeds caused by spirals can appear on curves. Occurrence of speed increment also depends on other curve parameters, such as deflection angle, roadway width, and curve radius.
