Failure Mode Identification Method of Reinforced Concrete Bridge Pier

Abstract

In the light of the importance of failure mode for seismic retrofitting and performance index quantization based on performance anti-seismic design, according to pier failure characteristics and failure mode of reinforced concrete bridge, anti-seismic test data of reinforced concrete piers at home and abroad were compiled and analyzed. Based on the relation between shearing resistance demand and shear capacity of reinforced concrete bridge, in order to investigate the relevance of shearing resistance demand to shear capacity ratio in plastic-hinge zone of piers and factors as follows: concrete compressive strength fc, longitudinal reinforcement ratio ρl, transverse reinforcement ratio ρv, longitudinal reinforcement index, transverse reinforcement index, axial load ratio, aspect ratio a/h0 and hoop spacing to depth ratio, two-parameter correlation analysis and partial correlation analysis of the factors in above were carried out. A failure mode index model was developed to identify pier failure modes: flexure failure, flexure-shear failure and shear failure. Results show that piers with Vp/Vn=0.7,ρl≤2.173% and a/h0≥3.880 are expected to fail in flexure; piers with Vp/Vn>1.0 and a/h0≤1.865 are expected to fail in shear; the conditions that piers with 1.865≤a/h0≤3.880 are expected to fail in flexure-shear failure are reasonable.
